Things to do

I have just been sitting here thinking of what fun things to take the kids to do. I don't think we will actually do anything today. We all stayed up late last night, here it is noon and some kids are still sleeping.

I did find that the train museum in Paducah is starting their free Train rides when you visit. Sure there is a fee to get in to the museum but it is not a huge one. My youngest is obsessed with trains. This will be a big treat for him.

I would love to find a place to take the boys where they can see tanks and other war type things. That is the other thing my boys are obsessed with. Mostly my 9 year old.

I found a pattern to make a crochet tank toy that I am working on today. I hope to get two of them done today so the green eyed monster doesn't appear if I only get one done.

My husband has used this time to teach my oldest son how to change a tire, put new brakes on my van and changing the alternator in his van.

I have been using weekdays to work on things for my upcoming etsy/ravelry/Facebook online shop. I will be catering mostly to newborn photography props but I will also have things for everybody. Gifts and "just because" items.
So I use the weekends to make things for myself or family.
This way I don't feel like I am wasting my time.

While making these props I am working closely with my sister who is the owner/photographer for The Right Angle Studio. She is a perfectionist when it comes to these props. So she keeps me in line a bit. I will be straying into my own things too since they aren't things she will be using in her studio. I am hoping she will take some good quality pictures of my other things as well since I do not take such good shots myself.

Now, before I get any bad remarks about me using these pictures. There is an agreement between myself, the photographer and the parents which allows me to use these pictures on my site. I would never dream of using these pictures unless I had permission first. Plus since the photographer is my sister I am in close contact with her during this and there is no doubts in any of this.

There will be lots more items to be shown as soon as some female "models" are ready to be born and have their pictures taken.

Jana's Scarf - free pattern

My sister has a foreign exchange student staying with her from Germany. I wanted to do something special for her before she leaves to go home.
So I designed her a scarf in Germany's colors. I am really hoping she likes it.

Plus being in the mood of doing something special I thought I would share the pattern with all of you.
I did not give an ending row count simply because each person has their own preference in scarf length. I will leave that up to you.
Enjoy

 Jana's Scarf

Type- Crochet
Difficulty- advanced beginner to intermediate

Material's needed
3 colors of red heart or any other WW yarn. I used Black,Red and Gold (though Yellow is often substituted in the German colors)
I hook

Terms used-
DC- double crochet
FPDC- front post double crochet
BPDC- back post double crochet
SK- skip
ST- stitch
SP- space
SL ST- slip stitch
CH- chain

Special instructions- Each row is began with a ch3 which is ALWAYS your first dc
FAN- 5 dc in the same st
V ST - dc,ch1,dc in same st
Half fan- 3 dc in same st

Color changes will occur after every 3 rows with the exception of first and last 4 fpdc/bpdc rows

With BLACK ch 27
Row 1- 25 dc across
Row 2- alternate fpdc and bpdc across
Row 3- alternate bpdc and fpdc across
Row 4- alternate fpdc and bpdc across
Color change RED
Row 5-  half fan in first st,* sk 3 st,V st in next st, sk 3 st, fan in next st  repeat from * end with a half fan
Row 6- V st in first st,* fan in ch 1 sp, V st in 3rd dc of fan  repeat from * end in Vst
Row 7- sl st (loosely) in ch1 sp,half fan in ch 1 sp,* V st in 3rd dc of fan,fan in ch 1 sp  repeat from * end in half fan
Color change GOLD
Row 8 to ? (however long you wish to make the scarf) Repeat rows 6&7
Don't forget to color change after every 3 rows
Last 4 rows- dc across making 25 dc. Depending on which row you end on you will need to add 2 or 3 dc at some point across this row. Inside a ch1 space works well for me.
Work 3 rows of alternating fpdc and bpdc like you did for rows 2,3 and 4
Finish off and weave in all ends

As always feel free to ask any questions or leave any comments or suggestions.

I would love to see your finished scarves and color choices.

A question

I am absolutely horrible at picking out names for things. Screen names, user names, email addresses, so on and so forth.
I am needing a name for an Etsy shop and get stumped each time I try. I come up with something one day and by the next I hate it.
How do people do it? I need a generator of some sort but then when t asks what input to put in to generate something my brain will freeze up and I will only think of what is currently on the television. which would stink because my husband and kids are on a military kick lately and I don't really want an etsy shop named after a WWII tank.

Free Pattern - Awesome Boy's Scarf

                                   Awesome Boy's Scarf

Size 15 Knitting needles
Bright green, bright blue and bright purple ww yarn. Any colors your boy wants. (Heck make it girl colors.....girls would like this scarf too)
yarn needle or crochet hook to weave in ends

What I did was make a "magic ball of yarn"
I randomly chose which colors and how much of each and joined them together using the Russian join
http://voices.yahoo.com/photos/how-join-yarn-russian-join-method-5279549.html
This way the length of each stripe is not the same as the next stripe. Plus it is fun to forget what you did while winding the ball and you get a nice surprise while knitting.
The only tricky part is joining and winding 2 strands of yarn at the same time. You can always add more yarn later if you didn't wind enough the first time.
You can always have rows the same length and join as you go along if you do not want to use the "magic ball of yarn"

Using 2 strands together,
Cast on 15 st
Row 1 - k5, p5, k5
Row 2 - p5, k5, p5
Repeat rows 1 and 2 to row 6
Row 7 - p5, k5, p5
Row 8- k5, p5, k5
Repeat rows 7 and 8 to row 12
Continue this pattern of 6 rows of 1 and 2 then 6 rows of 7 and 8 until scarf reaches desired length.

Cast off and weave in all ends.
Easy Peasy

Feel free to do what you want with the finished scarf. Please link to me if you choose to sell the scarves.

Oh to be back in the world of technology

Aren't computers the greatest? After all our worlds are revolved around them in some way each and every day.
Now when your computer crashes and dies you feel as though your entire reason for living has just went black. Then something odd happens. You start doing other things that do not need a computer at all. Things that you normally like to do but you were always stuck in front of a flashing screen to remember before.
Now true I didn't exactly go "cold turkey". I did have my ipod that I used every now and then to get a quick fix. It wasn't the same though.

I now have a new laptop. I decided that a big desktop computer wasn't what I needed. I don't do all that much and I rarely play any games. I have always wanted to sit comfortably on the couch while I do my computing and now I can.
My youngest son thinks the laptop is just a big portable youtube player for him to watch muppets videos or monster trucks. You know, the really important things.

To be honest...I don't really remember what all I used the computer for before it crashed.
Right now I need it for looking up patterns and writing them and such. Also having a printer is pretty handy too.
I am hoping to start a new adventure in yarn land here soon so I will be needing a website or something to help promote it and gain customers.
Thanks to my sister for helping me out I will have some great pictures to go along with it. I am not going to talk too much about that because it seems every time I talk about something I am excited about it never works out. So for now it is a minor hush hush.

I did miss reading all of your blogs and such. I couldn't really do much of that sort of thing on my ipod. It is old and not working very well. So I like my new computer just a little more now because of that.

Right now I am being summoned by my oldest son....so I guess I better cut this post short.

I hope you all have a really great day. Get off your computers and go do something you love.
